In 2009 the village shop and Post Office was put on the market as the then owners wished to retire. They failed to find a buyer. On the first of August 2011 the village shop, business and property, which had been run by Peter and Sue knight for some 25 years, was purchased by the village as a Community. We signed a ‘Company’ contract with Post Office Ltd. so ensuring a future for the hard won facility.
‘Our Shop’ is owned by the members of Hinton St. George and Locality Rural Community Services Limited – HRCS for short. HRCS is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as a ‘Registered Society’ for the benefit of the Local Community. Each member is a shareholder with a single voting share. Many generous members of our community purchased many shares when we launched a ‘Community Share Offer’ and others have either loaned or donated money either directly or through the Hinton St George Community Fund.
In 2008, there was a threat, originating in central government, to close the Hinton St George Post Office, a vital element of the viability of the shop. The community mounted a successful campaign, supported by our MP, to persuade the authorities to reverse their decision. Our Post Office remains as an essential part of ‘Our Shop’ today.
